2D barcodes
Two-dimensional barcodes encode data across both axes of a square or rectangular symbol, which lets them hold far more data in less space than a linear barcode and, for several formats, recover from partial damage using error correction.
Choosing a format
- QR Code is the most broadly scannable 2D format on consumer smartphone cameras.
- Data Matrix and PDF417 are common where a 2D symbol must fit a very small or very data-dense label respectively.
- Error correction lets many 2D formats stay scannable even with some print damage or dirt -- the tradeoff is a larger symbol at the same data capacity.
