1D / linear barcodes
Linear (1D) barcodes encode data as a pattern of parallel bars and spaces, read by a single scan line. They are the most widely deployed barcode family, favored for their scanner compatibility and low print-resolution requirements.
Choosing a format
- Code 128 is the general-purpose choice for alphanumeric data in logistics and shipping.
- Choose a retail-specific symbology (EAN-13, UPC-A) when the data must be a globally recognized product identifier.
- Linear symbologies generally need more printed width than an equivalent 2D symbol for the same payload.
