Retail / UPC / EAN
Retail point-of-sale barcodes (UPC-A, EAN-13, and their supporting standards) encode a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) that identifies a specific product at checkout scanners worldwide.
Choosing a format
- EAN-13 is used internationally; UPC-A is its 12-digit North American counterpart and is compatible with EAN-13 scanners.
- This site can render a barcode from a GTIN you already have and calculate/validate its check digit -- it does not issue new GTINs or company prefixes.
- ISBN barcodes use the same EAN-13 symbology with a reserved prefix, for books specifically.
